Second Edition - Seminar on “Role of Agrochemicals for Sustainable Agriculture"

OVERVIEW

As per UN data for 2019, India currently supports

~17.87% of the world population, with 2.4% land resources and 4% water resources. India’s population is expected to bypass China in 2024. Economic Survey of India states that although water is one of India’s most scarce natural resources, India uses 2-4x more water to produce a unit of major food crop than does China and Brazil. It is also noted from the survey that about 15-25% potential crop production is lost due to insect pests, weeds and diseases. These issues call for major changes in current agricultural practices in India.

ROLE OF AGROCHEMICALS FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Agriculture holds prime importance in the socio-economic fabric of India, with nearly 58% of the rural households relying on it for livelihood. The country not only has to raise its agricultural production but also the productivity. Agrochemical industry, which includes Crop protection/enhancement chemicals, fertilizers as also Plasticulture (for efficient usage of water) have an important role to play for sustainable agriculture. Bio Chemicals / stimulants are also emerging as solutions in the sector. For Example, Neem has been traditionally used in the country. The same is also encouraged by UNIDO.

SAFE & JUDICIOUS USE AND APPLICATION OF AGROCHEMICALS

PESTICIDES are recognized as an essential input for increasing agricultural production and preventing crop loss before and after harvesting. As per a TSMG report, it is estimated that annual crop losses could double without the use of crop protection products, hence, it is imperative to use pesticides judiciously as per the dosage prescribed. India has a very efficient mechanism for approval of pesticides to be used in the country through Central Insecticide board (CIB). Safe application technologies are important. Use of pesticide in India is much lower as compared to other countries like China (13.06 kg/ha), Japan (11.85 kg/ha), Brazil (4.57 kg/ha) (FAOSTAT, 2017). Indian farmers face the challenge of spurious/counterfeit pesticides in market. This problem plagues the country with upto 20-40% spurious pesticides flowing in different parts of the country as per TSMG. This needs to be controlled by farmer awareness coupled with official action. This indicates need for awareness programs. Use of Bio/botanical pesticides is also increasing.

JUDICIOUS USE OF WATER -ROLE OF MICRO/DRIP IRRIGATION

As per a report of ERM, By 2025, it is estimated that a third of the world’s population will face severe and chronic water shortages. Irrigation applications play a very important role in savings of water used for irrigation besides enhancing productivity. Fertigation (application of water-soluble fertilizers and pesticides) results in judicious usage of same as explained (Source – NCPAH):

RESPONSIBLE USE OF FERTILIZERS

Fertilizers are regulated under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. Specifications of various fertilizer grades are prescribed. It is important to use fertilizers in a balanced and judicious way with proper soil testing regime. Imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers coupled with low addition of organic matter over the years may cause multi-nutrient deficiencies vis-à-vis decline in soil health. The ICAR is recommending soil test based balanced and integrated nutrient management through conjunctive use of both inorganic and organic sources (manure, bio fertilizers etc.) for soil health.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

The Indian Chemical Council (ICC) jointly with United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and with due support of Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers as also NCPAH, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India, and various Farmer / Industry bodies, is organizing the above Seminar

The aim of this Seminar is to empower farmers with knowledge of latest and best in science on safe and judicious usage of various agrochemical inputs for Sustainable Agriculture. The program, while providing knowledge to farmers will, at the same, time create opportunities for the Indian Agrochemicals industry. The program is being conducted at Chandigarh – the region being an important food bowl of the country.
